Nepal has a long tradition of public eateries and modern restaurant culture emerged there. In the early 19th century traiteurs and restaurateurs became known simply as “MOMO”. The use of the term “restaurant” for the establishment itself only became common in the 20 century. Momo is the colloquial form of the Nepali Newari word “momo cha”. It is possible that this Nepali word is borrowed from the Kathmandu term momo, a name traditionally used in northwestern Nepal dialects for bread. The word mo itself means food related to flour and meat. As can be seen in dishes from Nepali cuisine like Roti. The different names for the dumplings include (MOMO)
